This months T-SQL Tuesday invites us to cover an impactful session or two from a conference. Before I go any further I just want to say a big thanks to both Kristyna Ferris and Steve Hughes for hosting this months T-SQL Tuesday.

An impactful session
To be honest, it was tough to choose one in particular. Because over the years I have attended many sessions. However, I think one that was truly impactful was the ‘DBA 2.0–How to Advance Your Career in a Changing Landscape‘ full-day session at SQLBits. Which was hosted by Denny Cherry and Joey D’Antoni.
Why was this session so impactful? Well up until that time I was mostly a working with on-premises SQL Server solutions. Apart from diversifying into other solutions now and again like Hadoop.
Over the years I had fixated in getting the most out of SQL Server solutions. Perfecting my craft whilst supporting companies that were in the Fortune 500 list.
I had an awareness of a lot of the offerings in Azure. However, this particular session opened up my eyes to a lot more of the offerings in Azure. Because it covered various services and some key points were highlighted. Plus, we got provided with a fantastic booklet full of informational slides.
Suffice to say that this session led me down the path to many things. Including working on a special project for my employer at the time and an improved awareness of the possibilities of CI/CD. I ended up absorbing so much knowledge about Azure that I ended up gaining the MCSD Azure Architect certification.
These days I present my own full-day sessions. Ensuring that my attendees get as much out of their attendance as possible and empowering them with the resources they need. Which in-part is due to this session.
With the rate that things are changing in our industry I highly recommend attending sessions about newer ways of working. Because you never know where it might lead.
